Preparing for your stay

A stay away from home can be a stressful time for a cat. Here are some things we recommend you do to prepare yourself and your kitty for their stay at Meowhaus cattery.

Here at Meowhaus, we have a bit of experience helping our clients prepare for an upcoming stay. That’s why we’ve put together a guide to assist you in making sure kitty’s visit is an easy-breezy one.

Four weeks to go

Make sure your cat is up to date with their annual vaccination: this helps protect your cat from contagious diseases and keeps them healthy while they're boarding. If due a booster, please ensure it is administered 14 days prior to admission. Be aware that if your cat’s vaccination has lapsed, your veterinarian may recommend a course of two jabs, given four weeks apart, to bring your cat up to date. You will need to ensure there is enough time to get this done prior to your cat’s stay.

We ask that you email through proof of a current core F3 vaccination before the stay commences, just to help ensure everything runs smoothly at check in. The FIV vaccine is not required, as our guests do not mingle with each other.

A few days to go

Get your cat carrier out a few days before the stay commences. If your cat has time to get used to it and explore, there will be a lot less stress when the time comes to set off! Remember to reward any exploration with some extra love and attention for being such a trooper!

Parasite prevention: We don’t want any unwanted guests tagging along for the ride, so in the interests of all our boarders’ health and comfort, we ask that you ensure your pet is up to date with their flea/worming treatment (most spot-on options are applied monthly). This means everyone: yes, even those indoor-only cats who have never had fleas in their life! We want to ensure no one is returning home with parasites at the end of their stay.
If your cat’s next dose is due while on-site, be sure to pack a spare and we will happily administer it on the due date. Alternatively, we can provide a monthly treatment to protect your puss against parasites for a small fee.

B.Y.O. belongings: Cats are creatures of habit and they can become unsettled when in unfamiliar surroundings. Bringing along a small item that smells like home (e.g. a pillow case or towel) can help them feel more comfortable in their new environment. We ask that you label any belongings and avoid anything with a significant sentimental or monetary value.

Medication & Special Diets: Make sure you pack enough food (if you want to stick with your cat’s regular diet) and medication for the stay. Please ensure medication is kept in its original container with the veterinarian’s prescription label. We ask that you do not bring glassware or glass containers into the cattery.

Write us a list: We love lists! Let us know about your cat's habits such as their feeding habits, their likes, dislikes, and any quirks they may have. This information can help our team better understand and care for your cat.

On the day

If your cat dislikes car journeys, try putting a blanket over the carrier to reduce stress. Drive calmly, and consider playing some calming music to soothe nerves.

Once at Meowhaus, you will be invited to settle your cat into their suite. Say your goodbyes calmly: Pets pick up on your emotions and can become anxious if they sense that you're upset. Say a quick, confident goodbye, and assure them they will get all the bribery and treats once back home!
